Coagulation studies are used to monitor how anticoagulant therapy is affecting the blood’s ability to clot. This helps ensure the patient stays within a therapeutic range and minimizes both clotting and bleeding risks. For vitamin K antagonists like warfarin, the key test is PT/INR, which shows how long it takes for blood to clot relative to normal. For unfractionated heparin, the aPTT is used to adjust dosing. Some anticoagulants may use other specific assays or may not require routine monitoring, but the central purpose of coagulation studies is to assess the anticoagulant effect. The other tests—lipid panel, echocardiography, and MRI without contrast—do not evaluate blood clotting or anticoagulation status; they measure lipid risk, heart structure/function, and tissue imaging, respectively.
